Midweek has arrived, and that means it’s time for Wrecking Wednesday! This week, Sessler Wrecking is highlighting a bridge demolition project in Kearney, New Jersey.

Sessler Wrecking was entrusted with demolishing two ramps on the Pulaski Skyway Bridge—the 44,220-square-foot Kearny Ramp and the 32,000-square-foot Newark Ramp—both situated in a confined area surrounded by local roads, rail lines, and nearby businesses. Crews started by performing longitudinal saw cuts along the full length of the structure. Once the saw cutting was complete, they moved westward to remove roughly 100 feet of parapet on each side of the bridge.

Using our Limited Swing Series Excavator, slabs were lifted, removed, and loaded into trucks for disposal at an approved recycling facility. As the deck came down and the cross beams were exposed, the beams were removed using precise torch cutting techniques.

Due to heavy traffic in the area, a safety zone was established before demolition, and work was scheduled at night to reduce disruption. Protective shielding was installed to ensure the safety of both crews and motorists from any potential debris. To carry out the work safely, in-house engineered support structures were designed and installed to hold the equipment, with crews performing tasks at heights of up to 70 feet.
