Decommissioned Rail Cars, Indian Head, Maryland
It is time for another action-packed Wrecking Wednesday! This week, Sessler Wrecking is highlighting an environmental service demolition project in Indian Head, Maryland.
Sessler Wrecking acted as a subcontractor on this project, performing the demolition of more than 20 abandoned rail cars located in remote areas, each containing unexploded ordnance (UXO), asbestos, and residual oils. This work required critical precision and strict adherence to safety protocols due to the hazardous nature of the materials involved.
In addition, our team performed select building demolition around live steam lines, which also contained UXO materials. This work required a careful bay-by-bay approach to ensure the integrity of surrounding structures and the safety of all personnel on site.
Tank removal presented additional challenges, as highly explosive materials were present and required specialized handling and controlled demolition techniques.
Throughout the project, Sessler Wrecking worked closely with the U.S. Navy and all major stakeholders to safely plan and execute all aspects of the demolition, ensuring regulatory compliance and mitigating risk while completing a highly complex and hazardous project.
