Sessler Wrecking completes demolition of Syracuse University parking garage
Sessler safely removed 150 tons of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) impacted soil from the site and completed the job with minimal disruption to campus activities.
Sessler Wrecking demolished the Comstock Parking Garage at Syracuse University, removing the 130,000-sq.-ft. multi-story structure within an active campus environment.
The Waterloo, New York-based demolition contractor says the project required careful coordination to support ongoing university operations and prepare the site for future redevelopment.
The New York-based university’s garage was located on a hillside within proximity to occupied dormitories and other campus facilities, requiring Sessler to use a controlled, sequenced demolition approach. The company says selective demolition and precision saw cutting were used to preserve the east exterior wall along with portions of the north and south walls in accordance with future site plans.
Before the demolition, Sessler says 150 tons of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) impacted soil was safely removed from the site. In addition, the firm fabricated steel plates in-house to protect the tieback system throughout the work.
About 10,811 tons of PCB bulk product concrete debris and 1,620 tons of clean, non-hazardous soil were carefully transported off-site and properly managed. Sessler says it completed the work with minimal disruption to campus activities and protected the surrounding structures.
