It’s time for another exciting Wrecking Wednesday! This week, Sessler Wrecking is spotlighting a challenging demolition project in Morganton, North Carolina, which our full-service Southeast team completed, showcasing our expanding presence and capabilities across the region.

Sessler Wrecking was tasked with demolishing the three-story South Building at Broughton Hospital, a structurally unsafe building dating back to 1885. Due to its condition, asbestos could not be removed before demolition, requiring the project to be permitted and completed with both friable and non-friable asbestos-containing materials (ACM) in place. Wet demolition techniques were employed to safely manage the hazardous materials throughout the process.

Friable ACM mixed with demolition debris required careful manifesting and loading into lined trucks for disposal at an approved landfill. The project also included the abatement of asbestos in TSI insulation and the cleanup of the connecting steam tunnel.

In addition to demolishing the building, our team removed a pedestrian bridge and retaining walls, backfilled the tunnel, graded the site, and safely disposed of approximately 2,000 tons of friable asbestos-containing demolition debris, completing the project with precision and adherence to all safety and environmental standards.

Finally, grading, top-soil placement, and seeding were completed to stabilize the site and restore it following demolition activities.
