It’s our favorite day of the week! Wrecking Wednesday returns with the premiere of our full-length project video, featuring the demolition of I-64 EB over Hampton River in Hampton, VA.

Sessler Wrecking was responsible for the full removal of 150,000 SF of bridge superstructure and 5,200 CY of substructure, some of which was located underwater, using underwater hydraulic hammers guided by Trimble 3D technology. The project demanded careful planning and precise execution to safely dismantle the massive structure while maintaining river navigation and minimizing environmental impact.

During demolition, approximately 4,450,000 lbs. of structural steel were removed. Concrete debris was efficiently handled using barge-mounted excavators fitted with clam buckets, with a significant portion of substructure concrete removed directly from the barges, emphasizing the complexity of the marine operations.

To ensure the river was completely cleared of debris, divers conducted thorough underwater surveys, verifying that all materials had been successfully removed.
