Sessler Wrecking completes demolition of historic hospital building
Firm oversees challenging demolition of the South Building at Broughton Hospital in North Carolina.
Sessler Wrecking’s southeast team recently completed the demolition of a historic three-story building at Broughton Hospital in Morganton, North Carolina.
The South Building was constructed in 1885 and according to Sessler had become structurally unsafe. Because of its fragile condition, Sessler says traditional asbestos removal could not be performed before demolition.
Instead, Sessler’s crew operated under a specialized permit, allowing a controlled demolition with both friable and non-friable asbestos-containing materials (ACM) in place. The firm used controlled wet demolition methods to safely manage all hazardous materials throughout the process. Friable ACM debris was carefully handled, loaded into lined trucks, properly manifested and transported to an approved disposal facility.
Sessler says it safely removed and disposed of about 2,000 tons of friable asbestos-containing debris. The project concluded with grading, topsoil installation and seeding to fully stabilize the site.
